City Sail 2015

Students learn to steer, navigate, control the sails, and calculate speed.  They also learn about the Hudson River and its marine environment.  Most importantly they learn about themselves.
“I would tell any friend to join because it’s really fun and how great it is to learn a new sport.”
“It’s so much fun, you learn something new and not everybody gets the chance to do that, it’s a thrill!”
“You meet great new people and you will just learn to love sailing.”

Program Overview
What is City Sail?
Escape the heat and noise of the city and enjoy the Hudson River.  Drive the boat, meet kids like you, and learn cool skills to impress your friends and family.   Go fast and measure your boat speed.  Accelerate through the water and learn what lives in the water.  On the boat, you will work in small groups – no more than 5 per instructor.
When is City Sail?
The program occurs over 8 week-long sessions between July 5 and August 26, from 9am-4pm. Students may sign up for multiple weeks – first-timers usually opt for 1-2 weeks and veterans go for 2-3 weeks. There are options for early drop-off and late pick-up.  At our Inwood location, the program is offered 4 week-long sessions from August 1-26.
Who attends City Sail?
Students in City Sail are diverse in many ways.  They come from all 5 boroughs of NYC, many states in the USA, and many countries around the world.  They range in age from 5th-11th grade (10-17 years old).  Some have never sailed and some have sailed for years (no boating or swimming experience is required).
Where is City Sail?
Program is held at our Pier 66 Boat House as well as at HRCS Uptown at Dyckman Street Marina.

Pier 66 Boat House is located where West 26th Street meets the Hudson River in New York City.  The program also utilizes various green spaces in Hudson River Park adjacent to the boat house.  While on the water, we mostly stay between Pier 96 at 56th Street and Pier 40 at Houston Street, unless we are going on a trip.

HRCS Uptown is located inside Dyckman Street Marina in Inwood, home to the restaurant La Marina.  Take the A train to Dyckman Street and walk west, downhill, towards the River.

Frequently Asked Questions
1.  How many weeks should I sign up my son(s)/daughter(s) for?
For children who have never been in a camp/program before, I usually recommend one week – a second week can usually be added if they want to continue.  For children who have been in some type of camp/program before, I usually recommend two weeks as a start and then more weeks can usually be added.  For these students, I think they are only really finding their stride and making lasting friendships as well as developing their skills by Wednesday/Thursday and then all of a sudden the week is over.  Having a second week really solidifies the experience.
2.  How old are most students in the program?
This really depends on each week and is difficult to predict.  Each week usually has a strong cohort of 10-13 year olds but it is also not uncommon to have a strong 13-15 year old group.  Regardless, activities alternate between age-group specific and age-mixed so that students meet new people and have different types of experiences in their boat groups and land activities.
3.  Is each week the same?  Will my child just be learning/experiencing the same thing twice?
While some activities are repeated each week in order to develop students skills through repetition (and because we think they are effective), each week truly does offer a whole new set of experiences.  To give a concrete example, the weekly trip alternates each week between southbound (NY Harbor, Statue of Liberty) and northbound (Palisades, George Washington Bridge) due to the switching of the tides.
4.  What are the transportation options to City Sail?
Unfortunately we do not offer home pick-up or drop-off services.  Getting to City Sail is easy:

Bike (the best way): Follow the Hudson River Greenway to Pier 66.  When turning off the Greenway, dismount and watch for pedestrians.  There is bike parking outside our boat house (be sure to use a “U” or thick chain lock).

Train/Bus: Take the C,E, or 1 train to 23rd Street and then either take the M23 Bus to Chelsea Piers and walk up to 26th Street or walk from the subway to 26th Street and 12th Ave.  If walking from the subway, cross 12th Ave at 26th Street, cross the bike path (look both ways!), and walk towards the red boats.  To your right, you will see our gray boat house.

Car: There is no drop-off directly adjacent to our facility.  Families may park on 12th Ave or 26th Street (be very careful of parking rules) and walk their child across 12th Ave to our boat house.  Students may also be dropped off at the corner of 26th and 12th.  For extended parking (ie. when signing in on Monday), use an area garage (closest are Chelsea Piers or 25th and 11th).
